Men, let's be honest; Valentine's Day can be a little bit scary. Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is regarded by many as the day of love. It's one of the few days in a year that your girlfriend, fiancee, or wife may expect a gift that is incredibly thoughtful or romantic (maybe both).

This year may just be the year to forgo the chocolate and flowers, as well as other traditional gifts and replace them with something a little more unique, meaningful or creative. Below are twenty ideas to get you started:

1. Movie Night Kit

Wrap up a new soft blanket, a chick flick (yes guys, a chick flick) or her favorite movie if she's not into romance movies, some popcorn or a favorite snack and gear up for a movie night. A night spent cuddling on the couch with a new blanket and good movie is definitely a night well-spent.

2. Indoor Wall Fountain

2. Indoor Wall Fountain

Bring the sound of relaxing, gently flowing water into your home that will allow her to relax and feel instantly calmed after a long day. These fountains come in a variety of styles and sizes so you are sure to find one that will complement her decor.

3. New Craft Kit or Craft Supply Refills

Does she have a new craft that she wants to try, like jewelry making or embroidery? Create a starter kit for her with everything she will need including a book to tell her how to get started. If you are stumped when it comes to finding out what she will need, just talk to an associate at a craft store and he or she should be able to help you out. If she already does a lot of crafting you could go out and purchase some craft tools and supplies to refill her current materials.

4. Massage

4. Massage

Give her the tools to rejuvenate her muscles and feel refreshed with a new massage tool. Whether you choose a mini massager (pictured), a foot massager, or get her a gift certificate for an appointment with an actual masseuse, she is sure to feel relaxed and recharged afterwards.

5. Journal with a Love Note

Does she like to write? Whether she writes stories, poetry, songs or just day-to-day happenings, a nice journal in her favorite color or style will show your support of her hobby and allow her to continue what she loves. As a bonus, you can amp up the meaning of the gift by filling out the first page for her; listing all the reasons you love her.

6. Aromatherapy

Women love things that comfort them and smell good. Try a neck roll or shoulder wrap laced with calming and relaxing herbs like eucalyptus, lavender, cinnamon and clove that will have her feeling serene and calm in no time.

7. Bring the Spa Home

Can't afford an expensive day at the spa for her? Put together a basket of spa essentials, including a container containing facial masque mixture, a foot scrub, bubble bath, scented aromatherapy candles and bath salts together to help her relax. Complete the theme with a bath pillow, a soft terry cloth robe and a terry hair wrap.

8. Rainbow Maker

If your budget is on the smaller side, or you just really do not know what to get her, this lovely little piece will bring beauty to any living space. All she has to do is hang the rainbow maker in the window to capture the sun's light and it will reflect off of surroundings adding extra beauty to the room.

9. Running Shoes or Workout Supplies

If working out, running, yoga, Pilates, etc. is a favorite pastime, then update her equipment whether that be new workout clothing, new running shoes or a new mat or gym membership. Plus you can get some of the same items for yourself and start working out with her or training for a marathon together.

10. Wind Chimes

Does she like the sound of wind chimes gently chiming away in the garden? Wind chimes are a great way to relax when sitting outdoors. Plus, they are a great accent piece for adding beauty and charm to any outdoor or even indoor space. Another great option to try is a wind spinners. While they don’t make any music, they provide a beautiful view as they dance in the wind.

11. Jewelry Tree/Hanger

Instead of the traditional necklace, earrings, ring, or bracelet how about a jewelry tree or wall hooks to hang them from. Personally, I prefer either of these options as opposed to a jewelry box because I like to see what I have instead of digging through a box.

Whether it's cleaning out the dog's kennel or re-doing the roof, knowing that those things will get done as soon as she gives you the coupon is as good as any gift.

Something that's on my wish list (yet not necessarily for Valentine's Day, although it would work) is a big shadow box to display my wedding gown, shoes and hairpiece. I would like to hang it in our (future) master bedroom along with our other wedding day mementos.

18. Sleep Mask
