What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D)?
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), sometimes referred to as Winter Blues, is a type of winter depression that affects about a million people every year between October and April, in particular during December, January and February. People can even be affected by SAD during dark, dreary, cloudy periods in Summer.
SAD is caused by a biochemical imbalance in the human system, due to the shortening of daylight hours and the lack of sunlight in autumn, winter and early spring months. For many people, SAD is a seriously disabling illness, preventing them from functioning normally without continuous medical treatment. For others, it is a mild but debilitating condition, causing discomfort but not severe suffering.
Symptoms from SAD.
People affected by SAD often feel the following symptoms:
* Not feeling refreshed after sleep (even after many hours of sleep).
* Having difficulty getting out of bed in the morning.
* Feeling depressed, anxious, irritable and hopeless during the day.
* Over-eating, particularly of heavy carbohydrates.
* Lethargy. Too tired to cope with anything.
* Loss of Libido.
* Physical problems, such as joint pain, stomach problems, immune system problems.
Treatment For SAD.
Various kinds of Light Therapy have proved to be very effective for most people dealing with SAD. Light therapy should be used daily during the seasonal periods mentioned above, and it is particularly important to expose yourself to a warm bright light during your time of waking up in the morning, so that your body can start its day in a much more calm, happy and refreshed manner. It has been shown that when you start your day in a happy, calm manner, that feeling will carry though your day.
Why the Soleil Sun Alarm Clock is So Effective
Our bodies have a natural biological clock for awakening, which is stimulated when the brain and the eyes sense a natural
light, such as a warm sunrise. In fact, a big difference between this type of (retinal-visual) awakening and an audio awakening (like the beeping of an alarm clock), is that the natural retinal-visual awakening sets our body's biological clock for future awakenings. So, the time one wakes up today, by light, is the time the brain and body are now programmed to awaken tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and so on, in a natural relaxed manner. The audio-awakening stimulus has no biological or chemical capacity for such programming, so it must be repeated morning after morning. And since this sudden awakening often occurs in a dark bedroom, the result is an awakening that is often jolting, stressful and disorienting, creating depression and anxiety in the body.
With the low levels of light utilized in a sunrise simulation device, like the Soleil Sun Alarm Clock, one might wonder how it can be possible to actually wake up to it. The answer lies in the fact that human eyes are ultra-sensitive to light in the early morning. As a result of having been in darkness all night long, the eyes, even with their lids closed, are able to perceive and register even the smallest amounts of light. When our eyes detect this increased level of light, a signal is sent to the brain's pineal gland. The pineal gland then triggers the production of the hormone Serotonin, which causes us to slowly awaken. This natural method of waking leaves us feeling calm, refreshed and energized. That is the effect of awakening with the Sun Alarm Clock and its warm glowing sunrise simulation.
Customer Testimonial:
"I heard about the Soleil Sun Alarm Clock. I was skeptical but intrigued. So I got one. Well, I fell in love with it immediately. It does everything that I read about in the descriptions. I really am now waking up in much more calm, natural and relaxed way. I don't even have S.A.D., but I gave one to a friend who does have S.A.D., and she also loves this clock. She said it really does make a difference in her state of mind in the morning. This clock is great for anyone. I will never need another alarm clock again. This is it. Thank you."
