Crate beds and dog mats serve the dual purpose of providing bedding for our dog's crate, and being the kind of portable bed surface that is suitable for any location. They travel well and most are reversible and machine washable. Those with waterproof panels are perfect for outdoor use.

These pads surpass blankets and toweling for lots of reasons. They are easy to clean, they maintain their shape, and they provide reliable cushioning. Today's crate fabrics are high quality upholstery materials. The cushions are furniture grade foams. They are designed to release pet hair easily, by shaking or vacuuming.

Choose the bed for your dogs crate in the same manner you would choose a dog bed. If you dog gets chilled easily, memory foam pads help reflect their own heat back to them. If you dog likes a solid surface, (such as a firm leather couch), make sure his dog bedding is not too soft. If your dog is prone to over-heating, choose a fabric that dispels heat, or an egg carton foam that allows the air to circulate beneath him. Sometimes, you can experiment with pillows, blankets or towels to see what kind of padding your dog prefers.

Crate beds come with and without internal cushions. Orthopedic mats are designed to provide additional support and are especially valuable for large or aging dogs. Fleece mats are cushioned by the very nature of their material and sometimes do and sometimes don't have padding.

Choosing the right size is important. Make sure it fits completely within the confines of the crate and doesn't bunch at the edges. Many have cloth tabs that fasten onto the rails to prevent slippage.  Some dog houses or dog kennels have mats or pads that go with them or are a perfect fit. Really, it is just important that your dog is comfortable and that their crate pad offers support and a soft place for your pet to lay while on the road or in their dog house.  .
